— RYA Youth Sailing Scheme —

We teach you how to sail dinghies at the heart of the city of London. The certificates within the Youth Sailing Scheme are a significant achievement. These can be used in other areas of your study such as PE at school, or the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. 

This scheme is divided into four different stages according to your prior sailing ability. Each course has a minimum duration of 2 days or an equivalent number of sessions.

Stage 1:

No required previous knowledge.

Main course content: Launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing.

Ability after the course: Able to steer and understand basic principles.

Stage 2:

Assumed knowledge: Basic knowledge and steering ability to Stage 1 standard.

Main course content: Basic sailing skills, ropework, collision avoidance.

Ability after the course: Able to tack and control boat speed, and understand basic principles.

Stage 3:

Assumed knowledge: Up to and including Stage 2 standard.

Main course content: Rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery, sailing theory.

Ability after the course: Able to launch & sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

Stage 4:

Assumed knowledge: Up to and including Stage 3 standard.

Main course content: Launching and returning to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sailing a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate.

Ability after the course: Able to launch & sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.
